From Cotton to Finished Garment: Where Environmental Impacts Occur
A garment is one product to the consumer, but environmentally it represents a chain of connected production systems.
A garment is the result of a system
For cotton-based apparel, the chain may include cultivation, ginning, spinning, knitting or weaving, wet processing, finishing, garment manufacturing, transportation, consumer use, and end-of-life. There is no single “textile impact.” Water scarcity, climate impacts, chemical use, wastewater, material waste, and land-related pressures can occur at different stages.
Raw material to fabric
At raw-material level, questions include land, irrigation, agricultural inputs, biodiversity, and farming practices. Ginning and spinning shift attention toward electricity, compressed air, humidity control, waste, and production efficiency. Knitting and weaving add their own energy and yield considerations.
Material loss matters because discarded usable fiber also discards resources already invested upstream. Circularity should therefore begin with efficient production, not only end-of-life recycling.
Why wet processing deserves attention
Preparation, dyeing, washing, and finishing can combine water demand, thermal energy, electricity, chemicals, and wastewater generation. UNEP has identified wet processing as an important hotspot for several textile impacts.
From my experience assessing textile facilities, production mix, shade, recipe, machine loading, reprocessing, maintenance, operator practice, and measurement quality can all influence performance. A useful assessment combines environmental indicators with operational context.
Use phase and end-of-life
After sale, washing frequency, temperature, drying, product lifetime, repair, reuse, and disposal can change the life-cycle picture. The central lesson is to avoid shifting burdens from one stage to another. Life-cycle thinking asks a better question: are we improving the whole system, or only making one part of it look better?

Credible environmental improvement depends on connecting measurement with operational context, management responsibility, and verification. The strongest sustainability decisions are those that can be explained, checked, and translated into practical action.
