Life Cycle Assessment Explained: Measuring Environmental Impact Beyond the Factory Gate
Life-cycle assessment helps reveal environmental tradeoffs that are easy to miss when attention stops at one facility.
Think beyond one production stage
A product does not begin at the factory door, and its environmental story does not end at shipment. Raw-material acquisition, processing, manufacturing, transport, use, reuse, recycling, and disposal can all contribute impacts. EPA describes LCA as a cradle-to-grave approach that evaluates interconnected stages of a product’s life.
Four ideas make an LCA useful
Define the goal and scope; choose a functional unit; establish system boundaries and inventory relevant inputs and outputs; then interpret results with attention to assumptions and uncertainty. These choices matter. Studies of the same material can differ because of electricity mixes, allocation methods, product lifetime, recycling assumptions, or data quality. LCA is not a magic score—it is a structured analytical framework.
Why this matters for textiles
Textile supply chains are geographically dispersed and technically diverse. Fiber production, spinning, fabric formation, wet processing, garment manufacturing, consumer care, and end-of-life have different profiles.
A material substitution should not be judged only by one attribute such as recycled content. Durability, processing, waste, energy, water, transport, and end-of-life may also matter. The better question is: under the defined conditions, where are the significant impacts and what changes reduce them without creating larger tradeoffs?
Use LCA as a decision tool
LCA can support design, sourcing, process improvement, hotspot identification, and communication. Its credibility depends on transparent assumptions and appropriate data. My interest in LCA is closely connected to resource efficiency because it bridges factory measurements with a broader product-system perspective.
